Worked over a shorter period of time, the abrasive particles diminish to produce a high gloss finish on hard and scratch-resistant paintworks. Diminishing abrasives as in the name get smaller as they are "worked in". This allows a compound to start with a higher level of cut with a larger abrasive. As the compound is worn down by the pad and machine polisher it becomes smaller and smaller resulting in a finer finish.
